Who says that people in the 50-year plus age brackets are ready for retirement? In previous years perhaps, when computerization was still in the infancy stage, retirement is the normal way to go upon hitting this age. But now, for most seniors of this generation, retirement is an almost extinct word. Who wants to retire when there are still opportunities open for growth, enjoyment and contentment? Statistics have shown that adults 50-plus comprises one of the fastest growing labor sectors in the U.S.: in 2000, approximately only about 13 per cent of American workers were aged 55 and above, but this has risen to 15 percent by 2006, and it is predicted that by 2015, the figures would be as high as 20 percent of all U.S. workers.
This is because through the years, older workers are postponing their retirement and still continue to be productive for a variety of reasons: to supplement retirement income, for continued self-esteem and satisfaction, the desire to continuously keep their financial independence so they can make or improve their lives’ choices, or to just simply maintain social relationships in the workplace.Still, some seniors work to alleviate feelings of fear, more so if they do not have the support and company of family and friends to offer them comfort and consolation in their later years.
Most often, seniors retire from a job to seek employment in another, such that the 50-plus workforce is increasing and becoming a powerful force to reckon with. Many new companies are coming out offering job referrals for adults 50-plus, and jobs over 50 are numerous and also challenging.Employers have found wisdom in offering jobs over 50, as these workers are more experienced, have honed their skills and developed the patience and established comprehensive work ethics which can serve as gauge of their efficiency. They are also considered more focused, even-tempered, and can be relied upon in times of crisis, aside from filling in the voids brought by the diminishing work force after the baby boom generation.
Jobs over 50 are various, and referrals may be found by applying in manpower agencies, who will find work suited to one’s skills and preferences, and level of experience. Most of these agencies have tie ups with numerous employers, and some even offer training for prospective workers. Some of the jobs offered are temporary placements, employed by business entities to supplement their core staff during peak season, and may even pay the same rate as regular workers. About 30 per cent of those hired on temporary basis are reportedly later hired for full-time employment.
The U.S Department of Labor and most local communities offer job training and employment services to seniors, making their lives more fruitful and meaningful. With the advent of the internet, access to jobs is just a click away, and seniors do not have to leave their homes to get employed, saving them time, effort and sparing them the inconvenience of travelling from home to the workplace and as such, providing them more time to be productive.
