63 year old retired U.S. attorney George C. Burgasser was found dead in the Niagara River off of Tonawanda Island In North Tonawanda, New York Sunday Night. He was at Smith Boys Marina on a boat with his son before he fell into the water at around 10:00 p.m. local time (2:00 a.m. UTC).
North Tonawanda Detective Captain Thomas Krantz says that Burgasser was last seen on his son’s boat, showing it off to friends, but he was alone when he fell into the water. It took at least 30 minutes for first responders to show up to the scene and found Burgasser’s body in the water off of Tonowanda Island.
Police have started an investigation into his death. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of his death, but police believe that the cause of death likely had been either a boating accident or medical event.
